Looking north on Radcliffe Street, this photo was taken from the top of the water company's standpipe, which was located on Radcliffe Street near Walnut Street (to the left). The large brick building on the left is Wagner Private Hospital (Franklin and Radcliffe Streets). Across Franklin Street was the house of Dr. Hussey built in 1849, just above Penn Street was the former St. Mark's School, (building with the cross on the roof). The water company was organized in 1874. -

Some visible buildings which no longer stand include the Bristol Flower Growers greenhouses located on Pond Street (left side of photo), the smoke stack at Bristol Water Works (lower left), St. Mark's School on Radcliffe Street (demolished in 1971), the Keene House (lower right along river), Elm Street row of houses which burned about 1985, factory buildings opposite of Grundy Mill on Jefferson Avenue (where recreation area is located), and Leedom Carpet Mill located where the Grundy Ice Rink complex stands on Beaver Street. -

Bath Street, Bristol. #528 Bath Street is behind large clump of trees in center. This is opposite Leedom & Son Coal Yard, which became occupied by Bristol Fuel, owned as of 1998 by the Quattrochi family. Coal yard entrance is on the right of the picture. In 1998 Bristol Fuel had a hardware store where a row of houses perpendicular to Bath Street once stood. -

Photo taken between 1940s and 1950s based on the fact that the Railroad Freight Station is visible, center left, opposite of water tower. The freight station stood where the Grundy Towers high rise is located. The former canal basin is now the Mill Street parking lot. The last canal barge operated in October 1931. -

[Mission Sunday School members]
Mission Sunday School met at Hosiery Mill on Buckley Street at Pine Street. Mr. and Mrs. James Slack started and ran the school and lived at the corner of Radcliffe Street and Franklin Street in a large three-story brick house they had built in 1863. Their daughter, Dr. Julia Slack inherited the house and she sold it to Dr. Fred Wagner. Wagner opened a private hospital in the house. Mrs. E.J. Groom was the wife of Dr. Groom.

"Laying the Corner Stone B. P. O. Elks 970. the [sic] was 1910"
Photograph showing the laying of the B.P.O. Elks 970 corner stone. The Elks home was constructed on Radcliffe Street at the corner of Walnut Street where the Beaver Meadow House once stood. That house had been the home of Augustus Claudius, the German consul when the U.S. capital was in Philadelphia (1790-1800). The Elks lodge stood until 1981 when it was torn down. The Elks relocated to a smaller building at Wood Street and the Mill Street parking lot. -

[Robert W. Bracken Post 382 Bugle Corps]
Photograph taken in the backyard of the Methodist Church. Building in the background was the home of the American Legion. Once a Quaker school built in 1874, it is now the headquarters of Bristol Cultural and Historical Foundation. The legion, formed in 1919, rented the building from 1924-1929 when they moved to their permanent headquarters at 619 Radcliffe Street.
