[The William E. Doron steam powered ferry boat]
This ferry crossed the Delaware River from Bristol to Burlington, carrying vehicles and people. It was named for its owner, who lived in Bristol. In the summer it also brought people to Burlington Island where there was an amusement park called Island Beach. The ferry stopped operation in 1930 when its owner retired and died that same year. -
[The two most visible properties are the Dorrance House (red brick) and the Kennedy House (white with two levels of porches)]
The Dorrance House was erected in 1863 by John Dorrance. The Kennedy house was built in 1831 by Thomas G. Kennedy, the first Superintendent of the Delaware Canal. This house is now law offices and the editor’s office of the Bristol Pilot newspaper (as of 2005). -
[The Steamboat “Burlington”, which was previously named the “John A. Warner”]
This boat was built for Captain Jonathan Cone at the cost of $60,000 and ran between Philadelphia and Trenton. The boat transported troops and army supplies during the Civil War. Captain Cone also had several other ships built on the river. Captain Joseph Quicksall, who lived at 242 Wood Street, was captain of this boat for many years. He lived from 1841-1913. He and his son Fred were in the hardware and furniture business on Mill Street. His son became a minister and left the business. -
[The Mill Street Wharf at Bristol, the primary Delaware River wharf in town]
It was this location where Samuel Clift came to Bristol in 1681 to establish the town, as well as the first landing for ferry services from Burlington, NJ. Small waiting room/ticket office was attached to the side of the wharf. -

Elwood Doron lived from 1827-1890. His son William inherited the business. William’s boat was called the “William E. Doron” and William lived from 1852-1930. Elwood appears to be the central figure in this photograph. The Burlington Bristol Bridge opened in 1931 and replaced all ferry service. -

[The “Columbia” steamboat]
Built in Wilmington, Delaware, by Harlan & Hollingsworth Company. This was one of the larger steamboats on the upper Delaware River. The “Columbia” was operating in 1911 when Doron Green mentioned it in his book “History of Bristol” published that year. The photographer, William Hay, died in 1908, therefore the photograph must date prior to 1908. -

[Steamboats tied up at Burlington Island amusement park, “Island Beach”, opposite of Bristol]
“City of Chester” was a Wilson Line boat operated from Philadelphia. Next to the “City of Chester” is the “William Penn” and another Wilson line boat, “Brandywine”. An elaborate amusement park operated between 1917 and 1928 when fire destroyed much of the park. Another fire in 1934 finished the operation completely. -
[Steamboat Twilight stuck in ice believed to be between Florence and Bordentown, NJ, based upon the height of embankment]
The Twilight was a regular steamboat that ferried between Trenton and Philadelphia. Photograph was taken by Charles Scott (1842-1923) who was a banker in Bristol at the Farmers National Bank. -
[St. Mark School, view from the Delaware River]
A home originally built on this site in 1800 remained until 1970. When it was removed to construct the school, some family names associated with the house were Wood, Montgomery, and Landreth. The school relocated there from the 600 block of Radcliffe Street in 1972. To the right is a red brick structure which is part of Harbor Lights Apartments. The building on the left is Wade Funeral Home. -

St. Mark School Radcliffe Street fire dated 1970 (date of fire confirmed as March 7, 1970 from the Bucks County Courier Times, article dated March 9, 1970).
Extra water was pumped from the Delaware River up the ramp that is adjacent to the Grundy Museum. -

It appears to be sailing past Burlington Island. On the island are several low buildings. The photograph was developed at Nichols Studio in Bristol. -
[Sidney Popkin (left) and Arnold Norman (right) standing on the banks of the Delaware River]
Arnold Norman’s parents (David and Rose) operated a stationary, office supplies, cards, and gift store at 416 Mill Street from 1929. They passed it to their son Arnold Norman, who continued operation of the store until the mid-1990s when the business was closed and the property sold. The men are standing along the Delaware River looking toward New Jersey from the former Harriman Shipyard and Fleetwings Aircraft factory site. -

This tall ship was from Philadelphia. It was sailed to Bristol for the annual Historic Bristol Day in October. People were permitted to go aboard. -

Photograph developed in 1932. According to newspaper evidence, the ship photographed is the “S.S. Bristol City” from England. That ship was the first to navigate to Trenton, N.J. following the deepening of the Delaware River channel. Part of the cargo was unloaded in Philadelphia and sent by train. The main cargo was 2,500 tons of China clay. The ship set sail on the return journey July 3, 1932. Officials from Bristol ,PA greeted the ship as it passed Bristol Borough on the Delaware River. -

Burlington, New Jersey in the upper right. Across lower portion of the photograph is US Route 413 between the Burlington-Bristol Bridge and US Route 13. Rohm and Haas Company opened in May 1917 and as of 2020, is now part of DOW Chemical Company. -

On the upper left is an underpass at the elevated railroad under which Route 413 passes. Schmidt’s Greenhouses (1895-2013) are in a diagonal line between the water tower and the freight train. -
