"Trolley stopping at 515 Radcliffe St., Bristol, PA Home of William Salerno"
Trolley line between Philadelphia, Bristol and Morrisville was in operation circa 1900-1932. Passengers had to get off at Otter and Bath Streets, and walk across the Delaware Canal bridge and Pennsylvania Railroad tracks where they would board another trolley to continue their journey. -

Trolley line between Philadelphia, Bristol and Morrisville was in operation circa 1900-1932. This trolley would have been heading to Philadelphia. The Sarah Keene home at 722 Radcliffe Street was built in 1816 and was later removed to build the Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Library. -
[Steamboat Twilight stuck in ice believed to be between Florence and Bordentown, NJ, based upon the height of embankment]
The Twilight was a regular steamboat that ferried between Trenton and Philadelphia. Photograph was taken by Charles Scott (1842-1923) who was a banker in Bristol at the Farmers National Bank. -
Postcard: "The 'William E. Doron,' Bristol-Burlington Ferry"
The “William E. Doron” ferry operated between Bristol and Burlington until Mr. Doron retired February 25, 1930 and died a few months later.
Inscription on back of postcard reads: "Dear Catherine-- Thought you'd like to see this photo of an old friend. It is one of 69 Bucks Co. views reprinted of our Card Club. We have 3 granddaughters with us past 2 weeks. Love, [Bud]." Addressed to "Mrs. Catherine [Schiffey], [Neuffet] Nursing Home, Bensalem Blvd., Bensalem, PA 19020." -

Otter Street at the corner of Bath Street, facing south. It appears that construction on the trolley line is being completed. The trolley visible connected Bristol and Philadelphia. Another line on Bath Street ran to Doylestown. Trolley lines operated from 1900-1932. -

The beginning/end of the trolley line to Doylestown, photograph taken in Bristol. The photograph was taken at Bath and Otter Streets. The Clossen House, later the Keystone Hotel was on the right.
Archive has multiple copies. One has an inscription that reads: “We lived just up the street, Bath Street Bristol.” -

Elwood Doron, and later his son, William, operated a ferry to Burlington, NJ until 1930 (this is the boat featured in this photograph). Elwood lived from 1827-1890, William lived from 1852-1930. -

[Bristol Canal Winter 1939]
South Gate of lock #4 (flowing toward Delaware River). Cochran House and shanty on side. Mule sheds on the side held approximately 40 mules. A large fire around 1920 destroyed these mule sheds and approximately 20 mules and one human body were found in the aftermath. -

The setting for the painting of the truck is at the former Byers’ Garage located at 100 Old Route 13 and Market Street. That garage presently has a business operated by Kevin Branigan called “Klean Kars by Kevin” which details automobiles. -

[Box car filled with refrigerators for Clarence W. Winter’s store on Mill Street at Wood Street]
This was at the Pennsylvania Railroad freight yard at Pond and Mulberry Streets. Clarence Winter attended Bristol Borough schools. He and his friend Charles Strumfels went fishing in the Delaware River near Bristol in 1914. They caught a fish weighing 330 pounds and was 8 feet 6 inches long. The roe of the fish sold for $200 to a New York City restaurant. Clarence Winter operated a store at Mill and Wood Streets that sold kitchen appliances. He also sold Buick cars in a building behind the Mill Street store. -
Postcard: "Penna. R. R. Station Bristol, PA."
This is the Pennsylvania Railroad station at the elevated rail line, which opened in 1911. Riders purchased tickets at ground level and ascended steps to the tracks. An elevator was available, but was used for large freight. Previously, the trains were at street level parallel to Pond Street. This station is at Prospect and Beaver Street. -
[“William E. Doron” ferry boat in its berth at Bristol between Mill and Market Streets, below Radcliffe Street]
The ferry connected Bristol, PA and Burlington, NJ until 1930. William Doron stopped his service February 25, 1930 and died later that same year. Two Bristol men, Charles Kock and Morrison Keich, owners of the “Sea Gull” boat continued to provide passenger services for some time after until the bridge opened. The “William E. Doron” sank at sea off Virginia. -

PA Railroad main line through Bristol, taken at the corner of Walnut, Beaver, and Pond Streets. Leedom Carpet Mill on the left was later replaced by the Grundy Ice Rink. -
[The “Columbia” steamboat]
Built in Wilmington, Delaware, by Harlan & Hollingsworth Company. This was one of the larger steamboats on the upper Delaware River. The “Columbia” was operating in 1911 when Doron Green mentioned it in his book “History of Bristol” published that year. The photographer, William Hay, died in 1908, therefore the photograph must date prior to 1908. -
[Closson Hotel on Bath Street at Otter Street]
Trolley in view begins at Closson Hotel and runs to Doylestown. Hotel Closson was later called Keystone Hotel. Presently (1998) the hotel side is now the District Justice Office. -
[The Steamboat “Burlington”, which was previously named the “John A. Warner”]
This boat was built for Captain Jonathan Cone at the cost of $60,000 and ran between Philadelphia and Trenton. The boat transported troops and army supplies during the Civil War. Captain Cone also had several other ships built on the river. Captain Joseph Quicksall, who lived at 242 Wood Street, was captain of this boat for many years. He lived from 1841-1913. He and his son Fred were in the hardware and furniture business on Mill Street. His son became a minister and left the business. -

From Harold & Carol Mitchener: "This was probably the blizzard on March 14, 1914. Transportation was paralyzed. Eighty mile-per-hour winds caused havoc. There were 127 poles blown across the tracks between Bristol and North Philadelphia. Telephone service was off, and river and trolley service stopped. Note the stalled train." -

Photo believed to have been taken opposite the present Harriman Station of Bristol near Taft and Barry Place. This storm was the worst since the blizzard of 1888. There were 127 poles blown across the tracks between Bristol and North Philadelphia. Telephone service was off, and river and trolley service stopped. The former Bristol Patent Leather Company would have been located behind the trains in the picture. -

Operating as an ambulance by 1907, this wagon was sold to O’Boyle’s Ice Cream Company in 1922 and became their first ice cream wagon.

[Bristol Fire Company No. 1 truck and members, Walter Moore in driver's seat]
Bristol Fire Company No. 1 was founded 1857 located on Wood Street at Market Street. It was the first fire company in Bristol. In 1875, a third story was added to house meetings of the Borough Council until 1926-27 when the municipal building was constructed. [Truck believed to have been purchased in 1910]. Walter Moore, seated in driver seat, was killed answering a fire in the Bensalem “Bridgewater” section at Haunted Lane when the truck was destroyed by a train. -
"Best Designed Float Hallowene Parade 1910, Winner A.H.H & L Co. No. 2, Bristol, PA."
American Hose Hook and Ladder Fire Co. No. 2 wagon float. This hose wagon was used in a Halloween parade in 1910 and was the winner of the “Best Designed Float” contest. [This is likely the carriage from fire company records that state in 1875 a carriage was built for them by Wilson and Randall Carriage Makers of Bath Street and was often used in parades.] The fire company was located at the corner of Pond and Mulberry Street. -
[Bristol Fire Company No. 1 on the corner of Wood Street and Market Street]
Friend’s Meeting House (1711) across the street with closed white shutters. [Photo was likely taken in 1926 when William Doron donated his car to the company. Franklin Gilkenson is likely the chief in the white hat. The other man is unidentified. The stable was added in 1886 with an arched door to match the other two doors.
